Mission Heights Junior College entered four students into the NZCF Intermediate Chess Competition. MHJC challenged students from range of local schools, playing a total of 6 matches during the one day event. Overall the team finished 3rd with a special recognition to both Leo and Aathif for winning 5 out of their 6 matches. Congratulations!
Our congratulations to Mikaya and Alina who competed bravely at the Eastern Zone prepared speech competition, at Santa Maria College recently. The girls were chosen as the ‘best of the best’ speakers from MHJC’s inter whanau speech competition. Thank you parents, teachers and friends for supporting this event.
On Friday, students in Mountains Whanau were teachers… leading a weaving workshop!
Mountains’ Maori and Pasifika students attended a weaving workshop at the Botanical Gardens earlier this term. They are now bringing this knowledge back to MHJC and sharing it with their peers.
Thanks to the efforts of Mission Heights students you will see some new trees in the community! On 28 July, students from Mountains and the Enviro Council planted over 400 native trees with Auckland Council. Students from Baverstock Oaks and Mission Heights Primary also completed planting in the area earlier in the day. Check out the planting efforts by visiting the reserve at the corner of Bellagio Way and Valderama Drive.
A group of Year 9 Mountains students and the Enviro Council headed to Tirititi Matangi on 3rd August. After an early start, students caught the ferry from downtown Auckland to the open bird sanctuary. Part of the day was to participate in a guided walk of the island. Over fifteen species of birds were viewed, including the Brown Teal, Korora, North Island Saddleback and Takahe, to name a few. Some of these birds can only be viewed on the island, as the pests on mainland inhibit their ability to survive.
Our special thanks to Mrs Carpenter, Mr Camage and Mrs Ramkumar for attending with the group.
Laiba Batool, Nandini Singh and Jamini Patel attended the New Zealand Spelling Bee Auckland semi-finals on Sunday, 7th August.
All three girls completed a written spelling test then competed against peers by spelling words verbally on stage. The words were extremely challenging!
Well done to Laiba, Nandini and Jamini for being in the top 200 student spellers in New Zealand.

At the end of Term 2, students from the Enviro DEEP teamed up with the Manukau Beautification Trust and WaiCare to clean up the community. Within 45 minutes, the group had hauled rubbish out of the reserve at the corner of Valderama Drive and Bellagio Way.
Students were surprised how much inorganic waste was being dumped, including spare tyres and old camping equipment. Indeed, so much rubbish was pulled out, that the group filled two trailers!
The concept for the Year 10 Mountain students this year was called Eggsperiment. This started with them being given a normal egg to look after, dress and babysit. The highlight of this concept was when the students had the opportunity to hatch their own chickens from fertilized eggs.
They made their own incubators and researched about the optimal conditions for hatching and were pleased to announce that after a highly anticipated 21 days, they had 4 healthy inquisitive chicks.
After spending the first 2 weeks at school, the chicks have found a permanent home with Mrs Bartlett. Well done to all the proud parents!
