As part of MHJC’s Matariki Celebration and to extend our 400 year old forest Tāne, MHJC will be hosting a Community Planting Day. This will take place on Saturday 11th June from 10am-1pm.
We are looking forward to seeing many families from Mission Heights Junior College, Mission Heights Primary, and KiNZ Mission Heights.
A reminder to our 2021 Graduates of the up-coming event this Thursday 26th May from 4-6pm in our school gym. Dress code for Thursday is new school uniform or smart casual.
Eleven MHJC students participated in the College Sport Cross Country event on Thursday 19th May. These students have participated in early morning trainings for the past term and such training sessions have definitely paid off, with several top 20 finishers in their respective divisions. Well done to our Junior Girl Anmol Kaur (9W1) who placed 16th and to our Junior Boys David Blanco (10F2) and Daniel Blanco (8M2) placing 17th and 19th respectively. The school came second overall in the Junior Boys 6-member team event. Well done to David Blanco (10F2), Daniel Blanco (8M2), Ryker Tolich (7M2), Lafaele Mikaele (8W2), Cooper Bowers (7F2) and Alan Shipway (10F2).
This past Friday was Pink Shirt Day, the final celebration of Kindness Week. Students wore pink clothing in support of Pink Shirt Day which is celebrated annually around the globe. The day began in Canada in 2007 after two students took a stand against homophobic bullying after another student was harassed for wearing pink. Since 2009, Pink Shirt Day has been celebrated throughout Aotearoa.
Another key feature of Kindness Week each year is our MHJC ‘Kindness Wall’. Each day this week, students have the opportunity to write kind and thoughtful messages to their peers in support of inclusion, happiness, and diversity.
Today was the kick start of Kindness Week at MHJC. Students and staff wore crazy socks to spread the message of acceptance. What a great start to the week!
On Friday, Water Whānau hosted a ‘Revolution Tour’ session for their Year 10 students.
This session was to inspire hope through hearing real life stories, covering topics that affect young people and to equip them with tools to navigate life’s complexities. The ‘Revolution Tour’ encourages and empowers young people to make positive life changes and choices, impacting not only themselves but the community around them. Students had lot of fun while receiving some serious messages around bullying, resilience, self-care and kindness.
Kindness Week will be running in Week 3 this term, from Tuesday 17th – Friday 20th May.
Awhinatanga (Kindness/Compassion) is one of our underlying values at MHJC.
A recent story of outstanding Awhinatanga occurred this past Friday. A number of students travelled off-site to participate in the Imagine Cup. One of the students attending won a competition at this event and was a gifted a brand new laptop as a prize. This student realised a peer of hers’ would benefit more than herself from receiving such laptop, so she gifted this laptop prize to her peer. What an awesome act of kindness and generosity and a huge display of one of our key school values!
